The Methodology & Why it Works!

Grounded in the Making Math Real ® Methodology

I use a simultaneous, multisensory, and scaffolded approach to math that develops deep foundational skills and carries students confidently into higher-level concepts. Instruction is designed to engage all three processing modalities—visual, auditory, and kinesthetic—at the same time, enhancing comprehension and retention for learners of all ages and processing styles. The methodology is carefully incremented and scaffolded, allowing me to be both prescriptive and diagnostic—identifying each student’s unique processing style and needs, and tailoring instruction accordingly.

Why This Method is Different—and More Effective
Unlike traditional methods that often focus on memorization and repetitive practice, my approach builds true mathematical understanding from the ground up—moving from concrete, hands-on, picture making experiences to abstract reasoning. I connect visual representations to abstract symbols, giving meaning and context to numbers and operations. This process not only deepens comprehension but also enables students to retain and apply concepts with confidence.

What is Simultaneous Multisensory Instruction?
This approach engages visual, auditory, and kinesthetic modalities at the same time, creating strong neural connections that support long-term understanding and recall. By activating multiple pathways simultaneously, it accelerates learning and benefits students with a wide range of processing styles.

What is Structured Instruction?
Structured instruction begins with core foundational concepts and progresses in a carefully sequenced, developmental order—from concrete, hands-on experiences to abstract reasoning. Each step builds on the last, introducing only one new element at a time to ensure mastery, integration, and confidence before moving forward.

A Research-Based, Student-Centered Approach to Math Instruction For All Students!

At Math with Jen, instruction is designed to support all types of learners—from those with specific learning disabilities to students who excel in math.

  • Inclusive for All Learning Styles and Abilities
Strategies are tailored to meet the needs of students with diverse processing styles, from Pre-K through Algebra 2.

  • Strengthening Core Learning Skills
Each session builds students’ working memory and executive functioning alongside math proficiency.

  • Clear and Explicit Instruction
Concepts are presented in a direct, structured manner to eliminate confusion and support mastery.

A Note of Gratitude: My approach is deeply influenced by the more than 600 hours of instruction  I completed at the internationally recognized Making Math Real Institute ®, founded by the late David Berg. Drawing on the extensive guidance I received from David, I have adapted these methods to effectively support students with a wide range of processing styles, from Kindergarten through 12th grade. I remain committed to teaching with the same passion and integrity that David instilled in his student teachers, honoring his legacy through every lesson I deliver.
